Once upon a time … not so long ago … two young (okay, youngish) women were sitting on their boards in the surf at Byron Bay, discussing important life goals between waves.  Curiously, both had long held the vision to share their passions for nutrition, yoga and wellness with others in an inspiring way.    After several more 'board meetings', they decided that the best way they could help others create a life rich in good health and happiness was to facilitate an escape from routine & order .... and immerse people in a environment of innovative food, energetic activities, and nurturing massages, stretching & mindfulness. 

 And so became HippyLuxe Retreats.  This is where we use love, laughter and the ocean to inspire, connect and learn.

Specialising in bespoke retreats designed specifically for individuals, couples or groups, we also plan several specialised events each year.  These range from 1 day workshops to 3 day retreats, and each event is limited to small numbers to ensure a personalised and inspiring wellness experience. 

Lorna and Kate have over 20 years of experience in their respective professional careers as sports dietitian and yoga teacher, and have spent the last 10 years embracing a love of surfing.

Lorna Garden

Lorna is a dietitian, nutritionist, and sports dietitian with a passion for ‘fit food’ – whole, fresh, sustainably produced food that nourishes, inspires, energises and creates a healthy body and mind.   She loves the effect that good food and an active body has on physical and mental well being, and has enough experience to know that there is no perfect or ideal diet or exercise regime that suits everyone….. we are uniquely individual and so should be our food philosophies and eating habits. 

Lorna has over 25 years’ experience and a special interest in sports nutrition, working with the Australian Cricket Team, Collingwood Football Club, the AFL  & the National Cricket Umpiring Panels, McKinnon & Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centres,  and the Victorian Institute of Sport. She was a founding executive member, and later vice-president of Sports Dietitians Australia (SDA), and in 2011  was awarded honorary life membership.  Lorna has authored, co-authored or contributed to a number of books including ‘Footy Food’ (self published), ‘Simply Delicious’, ‘Sweet Sensations’ and ‘The Ultimate Diabetes Cookbook’ (Lothian Books), and ‘Fit Kids’ by Lisa Curry and SDA.

  Lorna has consulted with numerous food companies, was nutrition editor for Runners World and Australian Athlete for 8 years, and edited a regular nutrition column in Woman’s Day for several years.  She has worked with many community groups, from children to elite athletes, presented several scientific papers and held many workshops with corporate and sporting groups.   

More recently Lorna created HippyLuxe food (www.hippyluxe.com)  and the HippyLuxe app which helps people find sustainable & healthy cafes & restaurants throughout Australia.

She shares her time between Byron Bay and Noosa Heads, and is an active patrolling member of the Noosa Heads Surf Lifesaving Club and a founding organiser of their Seahorse Nippers program for children with special needs.  

At other times she can be found cooking, eating or surfing!


Kate Rourke

Kate has been practising yoga for 22 years and teaching for 17 years. She has studied Ashtanga, Hatha, Iyengar, Vinyasa and yoga Therapy. Kate's love of the ocean and surfing, combined with her passion for yoga has inspired her to travel and teach in Bali, Japan, China, India, Maldives, Fiji, USA and Australia

She has also been running yoga/surf retreats in Bali and Byron Bay since 2005 and has recently produced a Yoga for Back Health Video.

She has developed a special interest in using yoga to treat illnesses and injury and has spent time studying Yoga as Therapy with AG and Indra Mohan in India and now teaches yoga therapy in small groups and private classes. She enjoys sharing the gift of yoga and observing its transformational effects.

Kate's style is fluid, feminine, strong, intuitive and creative. Her teaching attends to body, mind and breath and focuses on creating personal practises suitable for each individual.

Kate and her family are based in Byron Bay and she is an active lifesaver at Byron Bay Surf Lifesaving Club.

Her maturity, groundedness in family, and experience teaching diverse groups enable Kate to seamlessly guide classes of varied experience and ability.

She inspires with her passion, love and joy.
